Senior Firmware Engineer (Medical Technology)

Job description

We are seeking a Firmware Engineer to join an innovative team dedicated to developing cutting-edge medical technology solutions. In this role, you will be responsible for designing, implementing, and documenting firmware and embedded systems while ensuring compliance with ISO 13485 Quality Management System standards. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the advancement of medical technology in a collaborative and multidisciplinary environment. The successful candidate may be based in Sydney, Australia or Rotterdam, Netherlands

Responsibilities Include but are not Limited to:

  • Applying engineering skills and technology to the design of firmware and embedded systems.

  • Designing, developing, prototyping, and testing software and system interfaces.

  • Collaborating with other engineering disciplines to optimize designs and manage changes effectively.

  • Leading and communicating design issues with colleagues, customers, and suppliers.

  • Translating complex technical concepts into clear and simple explanations for clients.

  • Routinely documenting work, meetings, and key technical decisions.

  • Working within a project team environment to drive successful outcomes.

  • Conducting design analysis to identify and resolve issues during testing.

Job requirements

Education:

  • A degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.

Experience & Skills:

  • Several years of experience with exposure to multiple coding languages.

  • Experience in firmware/embedded systems design, preferably in highly regulated environments such as medical devices.

  • Familiarity with IEC 62304 (highly desirable but not essential).

  • Proficiency in implementing communication protocols such as Bluetooth, USB, Wi-Fi, etc.

  • Coding experience for various target architectures (e.g., Microchip, Atmel, STM, Nordic microcontrollers).

  • Strong understanding of the full software development lifecycle, from planning and architecture to coding, testing, deployment, and maintenance.

  • Ability to collaborate and lead problem-solving efforts within a multidisciplinary R&D team.

  • Experience in applying engineering methodology and effectively communicating technical approaches from requirements to execution.

  • Exceptional written, verbal, and visual communication skills for conveying technical concepts.

  • Experience in electronics development (preferred).

  • Knowledge of Quality Management Systems (ISO9001, ISO13485, GMP, or similar).

  • Experience designing and verifying algorithms using scientific programming languages (e.g., Python, MATLAB).

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (PowerPoint & Project); familiarity with CAD software (preferably Altium) and Adobe Suite is a plus.

  • Understanding of project management techniques, including time management, schedule planning, and client management.
